Mansions go McMansion as Modular Cost and Timeline draw the high-end buyer

Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, March 4, 2010

One day in February, it was an empty, snow-covered lot in Bethesda. In 32 hours, the property held a six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bath French country mansion with a walkout basement.

The 7,200-square-footer that appeared in Greenwich Forest 14 days ago is not yet a finished house. But it sure looks like one, with its gleaming windows, four sets of patio doors and symmetrical roof dormers. The heat, electricity and sewer went in last week.

A prefabricated, modular mansion, dropped in from the jib of a crane and set in place like a layer cake. For about $2.5 million.

Canada announces budget to reduce record deficit

TORONTO — Canada’s Conservative government says its federal budget will cut the country’s record deficit and move toward near balanced budgets in five years by trimming defense spending, international aid and government operations.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced details of the budget Thursday to mixed reaction.

Opposition Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and New Democrat Party leader Jack Layton say they will not support the budget, but they also will not trigger an election. Had they voted in favor of an election, it would have been the country’s second election in two years and its fourth in five years.

The government reported Thursday that the deficit this year will be a record 53.8 billion Canadian dollars ($52.2 billion). It now also forecasts a 2010-11 deficit of 49.2 billion Canadian dollars.
