Shamu Kills SeaWorld Trainer

February 24, 2010: Another “Shamu the Killer” death. This Shamu (generic term for all killer whales in SeaWorld) has killed yet another (third person) in an accident this afternoon right after getting drawn inside the Shamu tank, according to recent news. Police reports suggest an accidental drowning, which would be very much like the previous deaths. There is suggestion that the Shamu was pulling her in, in a playful manner. These are experienced trainers who work with these animals every day. They are aware of the precautions required.

Central Florida News 13, an Orlando Business Journal broadcast partner, reports that Orange County EMT specialists at the scene stated the trainer was not breathing. The Orange County Fire Rescue then reported that it was a fatality.

SeaWorld San Diego closes Shamu show after deadly whale incident in Orlando

February 24, 2010: San Diego’s SeaWorld also canceled its Shamu whale show today, after the Orlando SeaWorld trainer was killed by the whale at its theme park.

SeaWorld San Diego spokesman David Koontz said that “We’re terribly saddened by the loss of the member of our SeaWorld family, it doesn’t matter what park,” then went on to say, “We have canceled our afternoon Shamu show here today.”

San Diego’s Park Officials have not yet decided whether or not to cancel the show Thursday.

Hannah Storm

Hannah! When Will Men be Allowed in the Women’s Locker Room?

ESPN, sensitive about interpersonal relationships between its employees, suspended the attractive Tony Kornheiser -Heh. A little overboard perhaps? I think the man is contrite, and just suffered diarrhea of the mouth. Political correctness at an extreme? Well, I do think perhaps his mother taught him better. I have yet to hear a response from Storm on this matter. But for those who missed this yesterday, here are some highlights.

Last Friday, Kornheiser, on his local ESPN affiliate Washington D.C. radio show said that when Hannah Storm was on her show, she was in a “horrifying outfit” with “red go-go boots” and a “skirt was way too short for somebody her age.” He then added: “She’s what I would call a Holden Caulfield fantasy at this point.”

Reference: Holden Caulfield is the narrator and protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye. The novel relives the days following Caulfield’s expulsion from Pencey Prep, a university preparatory school based loosely on either Ursinus College, Perkiomen School, or Valley Forge Military Academy, Salinger’s alma mater.

Holden is a 16-year-old junior whose family is financially well off. His father works, but his mother does not. Despite financial comfort, he leads a somewhat troubled life. He tells his story using a casual every-day tone and frequently employing disparaging language and profanity.
